Palancar Reef

Cozumel, Mexico

What it is

Palancar Reef is the most celebrated dive site in Cozumel, a long stretch of coral on the protected southwest side of the island inside the Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park. It is really a series of linked sections, Palancar Gardens, Caves, Horseshoe and Bricks, where towering coral pinnacles, swim-through tunnels and a sheer wall dropping into deep blue create one of the Caribbean's most dramatic underwater landscapes. Visibility often passes 30 metres and the gentle drift carries divers past sponges, sea fans, turtles and the occasional eagle ray.

How to dive it

Palancar is dived as a drift, usually as the deep first tank of a two-tank morning boat from San Miguel or the international pier. Most operators choose the section that suits the group's certification: Gardens for a relaxed reef profile, Caves and Horseshoe for the dramatic swim-throughs that need good buoyancy. The site sits below 18 metres at its best, so Advanced Open Water or solid Open Water experience is recommended. There is no shore access; you reach Palancar by boat with a licensed dive centre, and the marine park reef fee applies.

Hours & practical info

Dived year round on morning two-tank boats. Marine park reef fee applies daily. Best visibility March to June.
