Cozumel is the most famous dive destination in Mexico and one of the top drift-diving islands on the planet. It sits off the Riviera Maya coast on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest reef system in the world, where a steady current carries divers along walls and coral gardens with visibility that often passes 30 metres. The reefs on the protected southwest side of the island, inside the Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park, are the headline: Palancar with its swim-through caverns and coral towers, Santa Rosa Wall dropping into the blue, Columbia Reef and the shallow turtle-filled Paradise Reef closest to town. The dry, calm months from March to June bring the clearest water and the best chance of eagle rays and turtles, while the autumn brings warmer seas and the occasional storm window. Most dive operators run two-tank morning boats from the international pier and downtown San Miguel, with afternoon single tanks and night dives available.
